Searching in ETCSRI

In ETCSRI every word form is represented on three levels:

in orthographic representation, or transliteration;
in morphemic representation (M1); and
in morphemic glossing representation (M2).

Each word form is also assigned to a lemma (dictionary headword), identified by citation form and sense(s).

Instructions on searching transliterations, glossaries and catalogue data in ORACC are given here [http://oracc.museum.upenn.edu/doc/search/searchingcorpora/].

ETCSRI is different from other ORACC corpora in that it can also be searched by morphemic and morphemic glossing representation. These types of search are based on the morphological parsing adopted by ETCSRI, which is described in detail on the pages "Morphological glossing" and "Morphological parsing" of this website. You will need to read those pages before you go any further.

To search by morphemic and morphemic glossing representation use the search bar in the coloured header at the top of the screen on ETCSRI's corpus page [http://oracc.museum.upenn.edu/etcsri/corpus]. You will then need to use the labels that identify the structural slots of the nominal and verbal template in ETCSRI's grammatical model of Sumerian.

So, for example:

to search for all nominal forms that are in the ablative case, you should write in the search window either "N5=ta" or "N5=ABL" (without quotation marks). N5 refers to the fifth nominal slot, which contains the case-markers in the analysis of Sumerian applied by ETCSRI.
to search for all word forms containing two genitive and one terminative case-marker write either "N5=ak.N5=ak.N5=sze" or "N5=GEN.N5=GEN.N5=TERM".
to search for all nominal forms containing a possessive enclitic, you should write "N3". This search will list possessive enclitics in all persons and number. N3 refers to the third nominal slot, which contains the possessive enclitic in the analysis of Sumerian applied by ETCSRI. If you want to look only for word forms with 1st ps. sg. possessive enclitics, write "N3=ju" or "N3=1-SG".
to search for all reduplicated nominal forms, write "N1=STEM-RDP"
and to for all verbal reduplicated forms, write "V12=STEM-RDP" (V12 refers to the twelfth verbal slot).
if you are interested both in nominal and verbal reduplicated forms, write simply "RDP".
to search all verbal forms with a modal prefix, write "V1", as slot "V1" contains the modal prefixes, and a given slot is present on the level of representation only if it is not empty.
to search for all imperative forms, you should write "V1=STEM", as imperative forms are analyzed by ETCSRI as having the verbal stem in slot V1.
to search for all forms with the modal prefix ha-, write "V1=ha".
to search for all verbal forms containing an ablative prefix, write "V9=ABL".
to search for all verbal forms containing either an ablative prefix or terminative prefix write "V9".
to search for all preterite transitive verbal forms in the 1st ps. sg., write "V11=1-SG".

All of these searches can be made with the basic search facility. More complicated searches can be carried out using the Advanced Search tool that can be found on the project's hub page.
The Advanced Search facility allows you to combine searches. So, for example, to find all transitive verbal forms containing a modal prefix in the present-future tense in the 3rd ps. sg., choose the "lemmatization" option, click on the "+" button to the right, write "V1" in the first search bar and write "V14=3-SG-A" in the second one.
Or, to find all sentences in which a nominal form in the ablative case corresponds to a verbal form with the ablative prefix, click on the "+" button to the right, write "N5=ABL" in the first search bar and "V9=ABL" in the second one. Set the range "following within 0 sentence".
